Why We're Different

* All of our puppies are born and raised in our home, NEVER in a barn or kennel.

* Mama is NEVER left to birth or care for her babies all alone. I am always just a few feet away.

* Our pups are well-socialized to dogs, cats, small caged animals, horses, & livestock.

* All our pups are lovingly handled every day, so they'll be used to people of all ages when they're ready to go to their new homes.

* We ONLY breed Chinese Cresteds, so you're sure you're getting a purebred Crestie.

* Only one litter of puppies per Mama each year--and we'll skip years if we feel Mama needs a longer break!

* All puppies from Almost Naked Pups are sent home with an information pack which includes breed info, puppy care, AKC paperwork, resources, and our contact info.

What is a Chinese Crested?

Hairless Chinese Crested Dog Imogen

Imogen--Hairless Chinese Crested at 1 year

The Chinese Crested is a rare & beautiful dog, usually less than 13 pounds. They come in both hairless and powderpuff varieties, and are prized for their unwavering loyalty, sweet dispositions, grace, and agility. This breed is considered one of the few hypoallergenic dogs, which is a huge blessing for allergy sufferers like myself! They don't have that 'doggie' smell, rarely bark (if socialized properly), and don't need a lot of room.
Chinese Cresteds
Intelligent and faithful, the Chinese Crested learns fast and always wants to please. Cresties are suitable for all lifestyles from singles living in a studio apartment, to large families living on a farm, to senior citizens living in a senior community. This gentle, playful breed will adjust to any environment as long as they are given lots of love and attention.

RESEARCH YOUR BREEDER BEFORE YOU BUY!!!!

Never be afraid to ask questions. Any reputable breeder should be ready, willing, and able to answer all of your questions.

How can you tell a reputable breeder apart from a backyard breeder or a puppymill? Read below!

~~Studding out an AKC dog to breed with an un-registered female. This results in pups that can never be registered, and sickly puppies often with a long list of health issues and genetic problems. Any breeder who studs out their dogs to an unregistered female is unethical and definitely NOT looking out for the best interest of the dogs.

~~More than one or two different breeds in the same location--this often results in accidental breed crossing and major health issues. Unethical breeders will lie and sell a cross-breed puppy as a purebred resulting in a tainted genepool and new health problems.

~~Too many dogs in one place--over-crowding leads to aggression, unsanitary facilities, and little or no socilization.

~~No contract upon sale of the dog--these are there to protect YOU, the buyer, so if a breeder doesn't have a contract, run the other way!

~~Does not allow visitors to breeding facility. You should be allowed to see where breeding, whelping (birth), and puppy-raising takes place. If the breeder is not willing to give you a tour, they're probably hiding something.

~~Can't or won't introduce you to the parents. You ALWAYS want to meet the parents and the other pets the puppies have contact with.

~~More than one litter per year for each female. Female dogs, though able to breed more than once a year, need a rest! Too many litters will shorten her life. Too many litters means Mama can't grow healthy babies and the pups are often born premature, sick, and weak.

The whole point of AKC registration is to better the breed by tracking genetics, potential health issues, and--above all--the healthy, positive traits of the Chinese Crested. Reputable breeders work together with the AKC to breed out the bad and keep the good through constant research, careful record-keeping, and countless hours of love and care.

The problem with backyard and hobby breeders is that they often have NO idea about suggested health testing or what kinds of problems to look for.

Backyard breeders have puppies because they're cute and cuddly or they want to teach thier kids about the facts of life--or worse yet--think they'll make a lot of money doing it.

They often have NOT researched the breed, their lines, or the potential health problems. They may think their dogs are perfect but end up overlooking a bad bite, bad skin, problematic hips and joints, poor eyesight or dry-eye--which then get passed on to their puppies.

If you've already bought an unpapered Crestie, I  highly suggest a very thorough vet examination including eyes and patellas. If the pup wasn't born from a researched and health-tested pairing then the chances of genetic problems are quite high. Caught early most can be managed, but if left unknown or untreated it could turn out badly for the dog and end in heartache for you.
